Yes, you can dual boot XP Home, Vista x86 and x64, just make sure have your RAID drivers to install your storage device. -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "xp noob" wrote in message

Derrh ! Did you see the big red letters at the top right hand side of this ms newsgroup, "BETA" , maybe thats the reason for all the multiple posts in error.

I used Partition Magic. As I understand it, the Vista setup will erase your data. It is also important after partitioning to start the Vista setup from inside XP so you can choose the install location for Vista.

You can choose the target partition if you start the installation by booting with the dvd also. If the partition does not appear then a disk controller driver needs to be supplied (Load Drivers button). Giving the volume an easily distinguishable name before starting helps avoid errors.

Interestingly I found that when I downloaded the image file on a helper computer and burned the dvd on its burner and then tried to use the dvd in my test machine I got nothing but file copy errors. When I moved the image file to the test machine and burned a dvd on it I had no problems. The download was fine but for some reason it helped to burn the dvd in the same drive I was installing from.

Ive got 2 hard drives, one with xp pro, the other with a new installation of Vista Beta 2. The dual boot menu appears on startup but both options say 'Microsoft Windows' and both boot Vista. I can boot xp only by changing the hard drive boot priority in the bios..
Ive read a little about BCDedit but I cant figure out how to add xp to the boot menu.
any help appreciated!..

It looks as though you ended up with Vista's Boot Configuration Data store on the Vista drive when you wanted it to be on the XP drive. It's not going to be easy to fix. I can point you to this page http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t381536.html but it's an arcane and daunting task.
You may simply want to go into XP, wipe out the Vista drive in the Drive-Management console by reformatting that drive and assigning it a drive letter, and then reinstall Vista. If you launch Vista Setup from within XP and then choose the "custom" install so that you can specify which drive Vista is supposed to be on, I think it will install Vista on that drive but place its BCD store on your current C: drive. Launching Setup from within XP assures that Vista Setup is aware that Vista will be the second operating system so that it will properly set up the dual boot.

Is the boot entry Earlier Version of Windows on the Vista boot manager? Both entries in the Vista boot manager simply say - 'Microsoft Windows'.. Ive tried both and they both launch Vista... I added another entry using 'VistabootPro' but it seems it cannot find the xp installation on the other drive..

I think this is what you are looking for:
Use Bcdedit.exe to manually create an entry in the BCD Boot.ini file for the earlier version of the Windows operating system. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt.
Note In these commands, Drive is the drive where Windows Vista is installed. . Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit -create {ntldr} -d "Description for earlier Windows version"
Note In this command, Description for earlier Windows version can be any text that you want. For example, Description for earlier Windows version can be "Windows XP" or "Windows Server 2003." . Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit -set {ntldr} device partition=x:
Note In this command, x: is the drive letter for the active partition. . Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit -set {ntldr} path \ntldr . Drive:\Windows\system32\Bcdedit -displayorder {ntldr} -addlast
Restart the pc
The info above was taken from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919529/en-us except you don't have to reset the mbr with bootsect because Vista is booting normally Although before doing any of this you might want to run the command bcdedit /enum from an elevated command prompt to have a look at the BCD file and see what is in there

Because of the curiosity factor involved in seeing how a x64 OS would respond to the digital media apps that I run on my 64bit processor, I decided to install Vista x64 on a spare 40GB PATA drive on my x86 XP SATA setup.
I installed the drive and then ran setup directly from the DVD during startup (I did not boot into XP first.) During setup, in the graphic presentation of the partitions available for installation, I notice that the spare drive (listed in the second column) had some old data on it, so I formatted it and then proceed with the install without incidence.
Upon restart of the machine, after updating some of the drivers, I noticed that I booted directly into Vista without a boot menu showing a choice for a previous windows installation. After another restart to confirm that I had the SATA drive selected as the first boot device in the BIOS, I again went directly into Vista. I then checked the Startup and Recovery settings under the Advanced tab of the System Properties, and noticed that Windows Vista was the only operating system listed. After another restart, I noticed that the installation DVD was still in the drive, prompting me to strike any key for setup, then booting straight into Vista instead of the boot menu or XP. Thinking that the DVD had something to do with the drives being recognized, I ejected it, then restarted and then booted directly to XP. In XP, the Vista installation shows up as my G: drive. In Vista, the XP installation shows up as the D: drive. The drive letter assignments don't bother me. What bothers me is that the bootsector was installed on the wrong drive.
First of all, why would the DVD interrupt the normal boot process like that? Second, how do I get the Vista bootsector installed on the primary boot device, which holds the ntldr/boot.ini files for the XP installation? Can I move the boot folder to that drive? I can't run bootsect.exe from the DVD, because its not a Win32 app. VistaBootPro was no help, either.
Can I dual boot Vista with Win 2000 Pro Sp4?
Thank you,
JT Cook
The easiest is to download and run VistaBootPro. http://www.pro-networks.org/vistabootpro/intro.php It uses a GUI and it is very simple to edit the entries and change the default boot if you want to.

OK, now that I've got Vista-32/Vista-64 dual booting, both entries in the boot menu are identical. Is there any way to edit the text that appears in the boot menu?
In NT days, I think the file was boot.ini, but Vista doesn't use that file anymore.

Yes you can. I don't know whether they fixed this new beta, but in the old one if you wish to dual boot with XP you must run the setup from the windows desktop you already have and choose the partition you wish to install it to. If you don't then it may overwrite it. This may be the same for win2000.

I am dual-booting with xp mce 2005 and booted from the vista dvd when I installed. I did a test run on another system a few days before I installed on this pc and installed vista on same partition, the boot selection screen looked the same as it does now with both os's on different partitions.

What is a "32bit base"? I run 64bit XP and Vista and I never heard of a "32bit base." The x64 distros do support running x86 software through Windows on Windows64, which is a thin emulation layer, but the OS is 64-bits all the way.

Because we are here to test Vista in its various sku's. Only 5% of the beta installations are x64 so anyone who can test it should.
The advantage of x86 is greater software compatibility and the advantage of x64 is greater computing power. The feature sets are the same. The importance of testing x64 is that it will be the predominate OS within a year of release and over the lifecycle of Vista x64 will be the standard.

X64 may certainly (no one in their right mind would deny be the preferred OS period, but as to "predominant" after year of relase, I'm willing to bet wine or something else Colin, that's not the case. Every leading indicator is that Vista sales period are not going to be the gugernaut undeniable movement that MSFT thinks it is. Leading polls done with decision maker buyers fall way short of MSFT's projections for migration, and you would have to bank no a premise that OEM X64 sales will be brisk enough to drive that kind of figure or otherwise that enterprises would do that kind of migration to X64 Vista boxes, and I don't believe OEM computer makers are going to be able to sell the need that all of a sudden in the next year from now or in the year after the probably held up again Vista ships to enterprises that people who buy for them are going to ditch many of their computers that can run Vista just fine, or even migrate to Vista. Study the figures. Right now there is a huge percentage of both private users and enterprises that haven't seen the need to migrate to XP. Look at the bills you get for a week Colin. Most of those companies aren't even using Windows XP and aren't going to jump to X64 boxes or even Vista for a very long while.

It's a matter of expirimenting and exploring both flavors of Vista to begin with.
Also, the system I'm doing this on is a simple system I bought late last year to run MCE 2005 to record TV shows. Nothing fancy at all, but it was also bought at the time with the intention of using it as an no'critical system that I could use to expiriment with.
It's a pretty simple basic system Dell Dimension E510 630 3.0Ghz cpu 1gig ram intergrated video integrated audio Happauge 150 MCE TV tuner.
Runs just fine using MCE 2005.
But, I wanted to see/expiriment with Vista on this system for a varity of reasons. How will the integrated video perform with Vista or would I need to upgrade it. (works fine, does support glass) How will the integrated audio work with Vista. (seems to work fine) will 1gig of ram be 'enough' to perform decently (so far so good, but i've just started)
The question of Vista-64. I also believe that the future will be 64-bit OS's so I wanted to try it, even though i'm aware that one of the big advantages of Vista-64 (or XP-64) is the ability to address and use more memory. I 'only' have 1gig in thios system right now, so I thought I'd see if 1gig would be 'enough' to run Vista-64 or perhaps it would run slowly, indicating that if I wanted to stay with Vista-64 i'd best buy more ram.
After trying XP-64 in the past, and knowing that drivers for XP-64 are sometimes rare, scarce, or simply non-existant, I was curious about the same issue in Vista-64.
Or, with all things considered, would I simply be better off (at least with this system and what I'll be using it for) by sticking with Vista-32.
I imagine that once Vista hits the stores, I'll buy another PC that'll ship with Vista. By that time I'll know by expirimenting with this one, just what version of what flavor of Vista (32-bit, 64-bit, basic, ultimate, etc) I want and what kind of system I'll need to runit on.
The adventure continues.

But I know from a source I trust that the largest system builder will stop building computers with x86 cpu's in about six months and will start supplying x64 as the default preinstalled system a few months after. 95% of Windows installations are preinstalled by system builders so the inevitablility seems clear to me. .. Yesterday I tried to install vista as a dual boot with XP Pro on a seperate hard drive. Vista installed fine, but with no boot loader, so I was unable to boot back into XP. When I tried the bootLoader program that rerights it to XP only the program told me that boot loader was not installed and blew both my XP and Vista Boot loader and the Boot.ini file for XP to boot. When I tried to reinstall XP over itself, it completely deleted my XP from the drive leaving me with a New install and none of the apps or anything else that WAS installed on it prior to the Vista boot program issue. I know this is a beta, but I would be interested to know what the heck happened. Besides I have to rebuild my XP Pro. Again, Both operating systems were on thier own hard drive.

Hi all,
When I first installed Vista, I intentionally disconnected all my other drives in my system, simply because I had too much data on the other drives to lose, now, i would like to dual boot between XP & Vista, and don't really feel like re-installing it, is there a way I can set this up now? as changing which drive I boot from in Bios is really frustrating.
Thanks in advanced.
Jason
I think there are boot managers which will look for your operating systems on various drives; Partition Magic includes one and I know there are others. There is also a free program called VistaBootPro which can make changes to the Vista boot sequence, but I don't know if it will find an operating system that wasn't present when Vista was installed. You could always start over and reinstall Vista after you get XP up and running again.
